A field guide to the living world's weirdest behavior
Oddly
Organic
Butt-breathing turtles. Fungi that pilot ants. A jellyfish that ages in reverse. Every fact here is real. That's the problem.
The Cabinet of Curiosities
Filter by branch of life, search anything, or sort by how strongly each fact makes you say WTF.
Real or Rubbish?
Nature is so strange it's hard to tell the truth from things we made up. Guess each one, and we'll tell you what's actually true.
Know something weirder?
Send us a bizarre fact about any living thing. We check every submission against its sources, and the best ones join the cabinet with credit to you.
- It has to be true, and you need a link that backs it up.
- The weirder, the better. "Octopuses are smart" won't make the cut; "octopus arms taste what they touch" might.
- Submissions are reviewed in public on GitHub.
Submissions open soon. Check back shortly!
About the collection
Oddly Organic is a cabinet of real biological weirdness, meant for curious people of all ages. It covers animals, plants, corals, fungi, algae, protists and microbes: the whole messy tree of life, not just the cute parts.
Each fact is based on published research. Where scientists are still arguing, we say so. Every specimen links to further reading, so you can check our work and fall down the rabbit hole yourself (or down the burrow, in the wombat's case).
